Madden 2011 may have New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees on the cover. This is the first cover determined by fan votes, and one has to wonder what influenced it. There is equal honor and terror in being named for a Madden NFL cover. It does put a person’s likeness on one of probably the most popular video games series. The Madden Curse comes with it, however. If you got royalties from it, that would mean some payday money for sure.
Drew Brees Madden 2011 cover first fan pick
The Madden 2011 cover was the first done by fan vote, and they picked Drew Brees. He did get Super Bowl MVP. The other top 3 also incorporated Indianapolis Colts running back Reggie Wayne and Minnesota Vikings defensive end Jared Allen. That begs the question if the voting was interfered with by Colts fans possibly?
The fabled Madden Curse
There is the Madden Curse to contend with. Supposedly, an athlete that gets on the cover of Madden Football, they’ll suffer injuries though correlation doesn’t prove causality. Shaun Alexander suffered injuries and his career declined after being on the cover. Vince Young injured his shoulder and didn’t start the rest of the season. In 2009, the cover was Brett Favre, and he tore a biceps and also the Jets went down the drain. Madden 2010 had Troy Polamalu and Larry Fitzgerald, who both played only a couple of games due to injuries. Is it possible Colts fans used short term loans to bribe EA to get Brees on the cover to curse him to injury in retribution for the Super Bowl loss they suffered at his hands?
Drew Brees thinks it’s the bees knees
Drew Brees spoke with BusinessWeek concerning his cover appearance. He asked any voodoo practitioners from New Orleans to put a curse on the curse, tongue in cheek of course. “If they’re Saints fans, then maybe they’ll put a copy in the freezer or something.” It is one of the bestselling series of video games. Electronic Arts, or EA, has produced Madden NFL for a lot more than decades, the first game being released in 1989. Madden 2011 can be the 24th installment of the video game. From a Q and A with USA Today, Drew Brees is certainly proud, but doesn’t want everyone reminding Jared Allen before the next Vikings Saints game.
